Each summer, the whole nightmare with the swarms of mosquitoes attacking us from every direction starts over. It's true that a large number of solutions to this problem has already been developed, most of them consisting of all sorts of sprays pulverized in the room or on the body, or the constant emission of certain chemical substances, but their effects on the human body are not quite the most fortunate.
A very interesting alternative to the solutions presented above is the Mosquito Mega-Catch, launched by the people over at Hammacher Schlemmer back in the first half of 2006, a high-capacity mosquito-catching device which is a lot safer than the established solutions. Thus, the trap uses a strip of octenol in order to generate a smell resembling the human breath, an UV bulb and oscillating LED's whose oscillation frequency coincides with the spectral sensitivity of numerous species of mosquitoes.
When mosquitoes get close to the trap, the patented airflow system that disperses the attractant sucks the insects inside, where they are collected in a mesh catch bag or a liquid catch pan that is easy and safe to empty. The LCD can be programmed so the trap operates around the clock or only during peak hours such as mornings and evenings. Moreover, it is not too big (40 cm x 26.67 cm x 30.48 cm) or heavy (aprox. 4.5 kg), and it can be used practically anywhere, in any conditions.
The Mega-Catch uses AC power (18.28-meter cord with weatherproof connectors included), and comes with a stand or can even be hung from a tree (optimal height is around 0.91 meters from ground). Moreover, the durable, all-weather plastic unit comes fully assembled, which means that it works right out of the box, without requiring any technical knowledge from the part of the user.
The Mosquito Mega Catch retails for around 200 US dollars, which is quite a small price to pay for a mosquito-free good night sleep.
